PodRide: World's Most Adorable Car
03 June 2018
Swedish design engineer Mikael Kjellman produced the PodRide vehicle with the basic idea of creating a weather protected ( and comfortable ) bicycle.
Technically, the PodRide isn't a car, it's more of a four-wheeled bicycle with electric assist and a completely enclosed cloth shell. This road-legal e-bicycle car can travel long distances both easier and cheaper whilst maintaining an eco-friendly journey.
"The basic idea of PodRide is to have a weather protected and more comfortable bicycle. I put a lot of effort into making it practical but it has also proven to be real fun to drive. So my solution has been this four-wheeled, fully covered bicycle car" Mikael said
It comes with ventilation, headlights and an indicator for safer cycling. The entire top of the shell flips forward, making it easy to climb in and out; close the shell and you're protected from the elements. It'll go over 15 mph with the motor engaged, Kjellman claims, with a range of over 60km.
The four-wheel arrangement is impressively stable, says Kjellman: in tests, he was only able to tip it by zipping around doing increasingly smaller donuts. It even has a little storage space behind the seat and a bike trailer hitch in back.
Kjellman explained he's always been an outdoorsman and long-time bicyclist, so building PodRide was a way for him to keep commuting in harsh weather. But he’s also committed to providing to spreading the PodRide design for its positive environmental impact: The PodRide emits only 7g/km of CO2 compared to 140g/km emitted by a gas-powered car, according to the campaign’s page.
